ONE WEEK after being ordained Deacon I wrote in my journal, ‘One week down and the rest of my life to go’. An extraordinary journey of service, praise and discovery has just begun.
After 10 years of preparation, involving prayer, schooling, discernment, and examination, the church recognized God’s call to me, and invited me to be Ordained Deacon. What had seemed like an unobtainable goal was now a reality. I would be asked to formally serve God in the role of pastor, advocate, and evangelist, and to fulfill my Baptismal vows in a new way. Was I ready? No, but I was prepared.
Like any major life step, one never feels ready, but with faith I responded; Yes, with God’s help. That is the key. This is not my call, but God’s call to me, and his help makes it possible. It is Christ who saves me, and with the surety of resurrection to a new life asks me to live the life he has chosen for me on this earth. How can I refuse?
Every day I will learn something new about the church, my role in it, and myself. I do not know where, or how, or when, I will be asked to serve but I do know that this is just the beginning of a new way to live my life in Christ.
