Retired priest faces charges

London police have charged retired Rev. David Norton, 69, with sexual abuse charges dating from 1977 to 1983.

He is charged three counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault. The allegations involved three boys, aged seven to 12, at the time. He served at St. Andrew’s, Chippewa of the Thames, during those years.

“As a diocese, we are saddened to learn that charges have been laid against the Rev. David Norton, a retired priest of the Diocese of Huron, by London city police,” Bishop Bob Bennett said.

“I have suspended Mr. Norton’s permit to function as a priest as we await the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

“During the days ahead, we will pray for all those affected by this painful situation, for those who assist them, and for all those who will be involved in this case as it moves through the criminal justice system.”
