Huron Church Camp Picnic and Day Trips to start by mid-July

An announcement from the Huron Church Camp

Huron Church Camp: a spectacular view to remember

We hope that this announcement finds everyone healthy and safe. Information is changing so quickly during the COVID-19 Pandemic and we are working hard to keep pace!

SInce our sad announcement about the closing of camp and suspension of our overnight programs for children and youth we have been dreaming about other ways we could enjoy the site over the summer months.

With the support of our Diocesan leadership and in consultation with the local Health Unit and the collective wisdom of many, we very recently received a go ahead to recall some of our older staff to live and work onsite for the care of the property, security and to act as hosts for day visitors.

This means that by mid-July we will be able to welcome a limited number of families per day to bring a picnic, enjoy the beach (weather permitting) or even try a few physically distant activities. Pre-registration will be required and everyone will be asked health screening questions before arrival.

We see this as a real opportunity for our young people to share the camp with their families.

We are calling this HCC Picnics and Day Trips and they will start around July 15, 2020.

Realizing that the camp is far away for many, we are also working towards offering Overnight Getaways in our wooden camper cabins for limited numbers in August. This will be a very rustic experience – our Dining Hall will remain closed so food will have to be packed or folks will have to go into town for meals.

Parents and caregivers will be solely responsible for the care and supervision of their children and will have to be with them for all activities that are offered.

It is very important to emphasize that these opportunities are not camp as we know it.  The picture we painted in our recent appeal letter will still hold true as this summer will be like none other we have experienced in our history. Nothing compares to the energy of a circle of young people jumping and singing and clapping and stomping or a compound filled with the thundering feet of everyone playing a camp-wide game or even that hushed, spirit filled silence as the gathered community prepares to pray, leap into hugs of peace, or reach out a hand to receive communion or a blessing.

Let us liken this time to a holy time of small comings and goings, where with a small group of young staff we gently blow on the spark of possibility and tend the flame of hope for the coming years when we can safely send our young ones on a life-changing  summer camp adventure once again.
